CarMax's 10-Day Return Policy: Get the Car Inspected While You Can Still Return It

Car Pro InspectionsOctober 27, 20266 min read

CarMax sells cars at a set price and backs them with a 10-day Money Back Guarantee. For a lot of buyers, that guarantee is the reason they feel safe buying there.

The guarantee gives you time. What you do with the time is what protects you. Here's what CarMax's return policy says, what it leaves out, and how to use the 10 days to find out what shape the car is really in.

What CarMax's return policy says

We read CarMax's own help pages on October 27, 2026. Policies change, so check them again the day you buy. Here is what they said:

  • 10 days. CarMax calls it a 10-day Money Back Guarantee. You can bring the car back within 10 days.
  • Same condition. The return holds "as long as the vehicle's condition is consistent with when you purchased it."
  • Back to the same store. The car goes back to the store where you bought it.
  • Refunds by mail. CarMax says refunds due back are typically mailed within 2 weeks of the return date.
  • Transfer shipping isn't refunded. If you paid to have the car shipped to your store, CarMax says that fee is separate and nonrefundable (with some exceptions in California).
  • Trade-in negative equity. If your financing rolled in negative equity from a trade-in, CarMax says you either repay it or finance it on a different vehicle, subject to approval.

The return page we read doesn't list a mileage limit. Ask your store before you sign, and get the answer in writing.

What 10 days doesn't tell you

The return policy tells you how long you have. It doesn't tell you what's wrong with the car.

A car on a CarMax lot can look clean, drive smoothly on a short test drive and still have problems you can't see from the driver's seat: a slow oil leak, worn suspension parts, stored fault codes with no warning light on, or a repaint that hides a past repair. CarMax describes a 125+ point inspection on the cars it sells. That inspection is done by the seller. An independent inspection is done for you, by someone who isn't selling the car, and you get the findings in writing.

Two ways to get a CarMax car inspected

Before you buy, if your store allows it. CarMax lets you see and test-drive cars at its stores, and you can have a car shipped to a store near you. Whether a store will let an outside inspector look at the car before purchase is up to that store, so ask first. If it says yes, we come to the store.

After you buy, inside the 10 days. This one is always in your hands. Once the car is in your driveway, it's yours to have inspected. Do it in the first two or three days, so you have time to act on what the report finds and still get the car back to the store before day 10.

How a mobile inspection fits a 10-day window

We're fully mobile. One of our certified technicians comes to the vehicle at your home, your workplace, or the store if it allows it, anywhere across the greater Atlanta, GA and Orlando, FL metro areas. You don't have to take time off to sit at a shop.

Every package covers mechanical and safety systems, the underbody and structure, brakes, suspension and steering, a dealer-level diagnostic scan, and a road test when it's safe and legal to drive. You get a written report with photos by email:

  • Essential ($259): our full mechanical, safety and underbody inspection with a dealer-level scan and a plain-English summary of what the scan found.
  • Enhanced ($399): adds accident investigation, a panel-by-panel repaint and body filler check, repair cost range guidance and a summary video walk-through.
  • Elite ($649): everything in Enhanced, plus a detailed video walk-through and a 30-minute priority consultation.

Essential and Enhanced reports arrive within 24 hours of the inspection, and most go out the same day. Elite reports arrive by 11:59 PM Eastern on inspection day, or we refund $99. The full list for each package is on our services page.

If a travel fee applies where the car is, we confirm it with you before the inspection.

What to do with the report

  1. Keep it. The report came back clean, or close to it, and you keep the car knowing what you bought.
  2. Ask about the findings. Take the report to the store while you're still inside the 10 days and ask what it will do. Don't assume a repair; ask, and get the answer in writing.
  3. Return it. If the findings are more than you want to take on, take the car back to the store where you bought it before the 10 days are up.

The price at CarMax is set, so the report isn't for haggling at the counter. It's for deciding whether this is the car you keep.

Pros and cons of buying from CarMax

What works well:

  • You can see and test-drive the car at a store before you buy.
  • The price is set, so there's no back-and-forth.
  • Ten days is real time to live with the car and have it inspected.

What to watch:

  • The return goes back to the store where you bought it, so a car shipped from a store far away means a trip back there.
  • Transfer shipping fees don't come back if you return the car.
  • The return holds only if the car's condition is consistent with the day you bought it, so a problem you cause in those 10 days can cost you the return.

CarMax vs a franchise dealer

A franchise dealer usually lets you negotiate and lets you inspect before you sign, but federal law doesn't give you a return window. The FTC puts it plainly: "Federal law doesn't require dealers to give you three days to cancel the deal and return the car." Some states and some dealers offer one; many don't.

CarMax trades the haggling for a set price and a 10-day return. What both have in common: the car is worth inspecting by someone who works for you, before your chance to walk away closes. At a dealer, that's before you sign. At CarMax, it's before day 10.

Quick answers

How long is CarMax's return policy? 10 days, by CarMax's own terms, as long as the car's condition is consistent with when you bought it.

Does CarMax refund shipping if I return the car? CarMax says shipping fees paid to transfer the car are separate and nonrefundable, with some exceptions in California.

Can I get an independent inspection on a CarMax car? After you buy, yes: the car is yours, and a mobile inspection comes to your driveway inside the 10 days. Before you buy, ask your store; it's the store's call.
